* Eight Manusi Buddhas. The subject had first been depicted aniconically among the Bharhut reliefs and in iconic forms in Gandhara arts; probably in Ajanta that it was finally committed to painting.

* Buddhas accompanied by bodhisattvas, attendants, and worshipers. The Deccan caves like Ajanta once certainly contained the oldest extant paintings of Buddha images in India. Anthropomorphic Buddha and bodhisattva sculptures have already been depicted in Gandhara [3.14] and Mathura [3.21] in the first century CE and Buddha images might also have been painted about the same time [5.1] or slightly later in Ajanta.
